“You… you, my fviend, you are a too…. too…” shakes his head to realign thoughts, perhaps, “a veal fviend.”

“No no Deshpande sir… I’m just an ordinary man. I’m glad I could help”, Menon shrugged.

“Help?! This is not help. This is heaven, my fviend! Heaven!”

“Deshpande sir, you are going off track again. You were telling us about those bandits…!” Menon said.

“Bandits?! No, tevvovists!! Planning to kill our god himself!”

“Oh I’m sorry… terrorists.”

“Yes, tevvovists… so I… err… where was I?”

Prompt: Cut the Strings  |  Genre: Drama |  Word count: 1000 words

I’m sure I’ve already wiped my hands on my skirt twice in the last five minutes. I don’t want him to see how nervous I am. Hell, I don’t want him to see my sweaty hands! He has already tried to cancel this dinner. Why did I insist? I shouldn’t have done that. Maybe I can quietly leave before he comes?

Her Duties by Joyce Finny

Prompt: The List  |  Genre: Drama  |  Word count: 1500 words

Caution: Contains graphically violent scenes and coarse language

You are lying on your bed and staring at the ceiling. You had hoped to stare aimlessly, trying to take your mind off what’s happening to you. But then you spot a cobweb in the corner. And suddenly you hear your mother, sounding like an ancient figurehead, almost as if it isn’t her but a thousand score ancestors speaking through her, “A woman must keep her house and herself clean and beautiful, as a bride decked up for her husband.”

It always happens, this intrusion of strange voices. They come in at the most inopportune moments. As if they are a list of songs on an old record playing on an even older gramophone, that never works when it should, and always when it shouldn’t.

Author’s note: All references to any person living or dead (or immortal or undead) are purely fictional, and are meant only to evoke a laugh.

“Again?! How many times have I told you I don’t like it!”

“Hmmm…”

“Are you even listening to me?? What is that? What are you reading?!”

“Nothing”, he suddenly looked up, alarmed. “It’s just the news.”

She snatched the scroll away from him. And all hell broke loose.

Finding Sarah by Joyce Finny

Prompt: Going Home  |  Word count: 500 words exactly  |  Genre:  Spiritual? (Could use some suggestions)

The heat from the spotlight was stifling her. She had to wear a dress with a Chinese collar neck. Urgh!  When was this going to end?

“Mrs. Thomas… err…?”, the journalist suddenly looked a little unsure of himself. He must have never dealt with “an eccentric” before.

That’s what they had called her, the media. Eccentric! What a blanket statement that one word was!

“Oh sorry! Can you please repeat your question?”
